Agreeing to take this assignment I was promised a promotion to Private First Class at the end of Basic Training. During Basic I was approached to go to Officers Candidate School and I declined. I was only 20 years old and could not see myself leading men in combat. Thus, at the end of Basic my guaranteed promotion was rejected and 4 of us that declined to go to OCS were sent to Fort Polk Tigerland where we were locked in Barracks for two weeks to think about changing our minds. Everyone else was sent home for two weeks leave. We all still refused and were pissed off at such treatment from the US Army.
