On May 17, 1967, while preparing for a convoy mission vicinity of Xuan Loc, BOYD and his unit were subject to a mortar attack. US forces were in final stages of evacuating an FSB when the attack occurred. Confusion regarding the attack was exacerbated by the heavy rotor wash of several Chinook helicopters. In addition, many of the defensive positions had been filled in. BOYD was the only one killed though several more were WIA. A round landed close to BOYD and he was killed instantly.
