Was proud of newborn daughter

The Associated Press

Tyler Walshe’s wife, Kirsten Walshe-Vietti, said he was “the most amazing person.”

Friend Ruben Contreras wrote online that he’ll miss playing basketball with the 21-year-old soldier and he has “nothing but good things to say” about Walshe.
“I watched Tyler hold and comfort his daughter like a proud father,” another acquaintance, Guy Lane, wrote online, sympathizing with his family. “Memories and stories from others will be all she ever has of her father now.”

Walshe, the father of 11-month-old Karsyn, died Aug. 31 when his unit was attacked in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. He was based at Fort Lewis, Wash.
Walshe joined the Army in October 2006. He was deployed to Afghanistan in July.

“I just can’t believe he’s gone,” his wife said. “I’m trying really, really hard to keep it together and to stay strong for my daughter. She doesn’t understand that daddy’s gone.”

Walshe’s wife said their daughter’s first birthday is Nov. 11, which is Veterans Day.

His honors include the National Defense Service Medal, and Army Service Ribbon and Combat Infantryman Badge.
