FINAL MISSION OF SP4 TIMOTHY J. LYNCH

SP4 Timothy J. Lynch was an indirect fire infantryman serving with E Company, 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division at LZ Stinson. SP4 Lynch served in the 4.2 inch mortars, generally referred to as the 4-Duce on LZ Stinson. His missions were to support forward troops with mortar fire and to serve the Battalion Tactical Operations Command in defense of LZ Stinson. LZ Stinson was a forward fire support base that was surrounded by Viet Cong and was frequently attacked by the North Vietnamese Army. On August 12, 1971, Lynch was critically burned in a flash fire in the mortar pit. His unit used to store their excess mortar charges in a hollow within the mortar pit. Somehow those were ignited. Lynch was evacuated to the 91st Evacuation Hospital in Chu Lai. He succumbed to his injuries on August 16, 1971. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and togetherweserved.com]
