Casualty Occurrence: This Soldier was killed when a chopper he was a door gunner on CRASHED IN MEKONG RIVER 8 KM W-NW OF CAO LANH CITY 19700108 in Kein Phong Province.
SP4 William Edward Barnes, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Rocky Mount, NC. SP4 William Edward Barnes was a member of the Army and served our country until January 8th, 1970 in Kien Phong, South Vietnam. He was 29 years old and was married. It was reported that William died when his helicopter crashed. His body was recovered. SP4 Barnes is on panel 14W, line 011 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 2 years. He is the Son of Mr Alexander and Mrs Magnolia Andrew Barnes, husband of Mrs Jacqueline Barnes of Rocky Mount. He served with the 114th Assault Helicopter Company, 164th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade, USARV. He was awarded The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Army Commendation Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters.

He is the Son of Mr Alexander and Mrs Magnolia Andrew Barnes, husband of Mrs Jacqueline Barnes of Rocky Mount. He was awarded The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Army Commendation Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters. On 2 July 1966, UP GO 41 HQ USARV, the 114th Aviation Company (Air Mobile Light) came under the control of the 1st Aviation Brigade, USARV, and was re-designated the 114th Assault Helicopter Company. In October 1969 the 114th Assault Helicopter Company was released from assignment to the 13th Aviation Battalion (Combat) and reassigned to the 214th Aviation Battalion (Combat).
