Art Carney enlisted on 22 December 1943 in New York City.
He served with the 28th Infantry Division, and landed at Normandy in July 1944, and involved in the fighting around St. Lo, France. On 15 August 1944, while manning a machine gun, a German mortar shell blew him in the air, severely wounding him in his right leg. He was sent back to Normandy and taken to a Army hospital in the English Midlands.
Nine months later, he was sent to McQuire General Hospital near Richmond, Virginia. He was awarded the Purple Heart there and was honorably discharged. He always had a limp from that wound., and is quoted to have said of his military career, "Never fired a shot and maybe never wanted to. I really cost the government money."
After the service, he went back to New York where he found work at CBS Radio doing his old shows and a many new ones.
He is most remembered for playing the character of Ed Norton on the television series, "The Honeymooners". He continued to act in television, stage, movies.
He received an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the film "Harry and Tonto", 1974. He was awarded 6 Emmys during his lifetime, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Following his passing, Art Carney was interred in Riverside Cemetery, Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut.
