SSgt. Harris served as a B-24D bomber gunner with the 320th Bombardment Squadron, 90th Bombardment Group, 5th Air Force in the Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII.
On 27 October he was flying aboard B-24D-115-CO "Shack Rat" (Tail Number 42-40918 ) when he and his crew were lost during operations in bad weather. They were on a reconnaissance mission, observing enemy ships in the Bismarck Sea where the Allies planned to attack a Japanese base, out of Port Moresby, New Guinea crashing into Sarawaget Mountain Range in Morobe Province. At the time of their loss, they had been flying at least 7+ hours.
They were listed as MIA, and were listed under Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) 963. Between 2005 and 2007, after items and human remains belonging to the crew were found by locals, the JPAC found the remains of the crew, near Huon Bay, Dobadura Island Group. who were interred in 2011.
