On the night of September 4, 1950, near Yongsan, South Korea, his platoon was protecting the battalion's flank. Early the next morning, the enemy attacked and encircled the balance of his company. His platoon attacked and dispersed the encircling force and he personally destroyed enemy machine gunners and delivered fire on the startled enemy with the captured machine-gun, relieving his encircled company. He received the Medal of Honor for this action.
Later, he was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on February 10, 1951, near Sogu - Yangsan.
Comments/Citation:
Prior to service in Korea, Sgt. Kaufman served from December 1941 in the Army. He fought with the 3rd Infantry in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France.
The Veterans Administration clinic in The Dalles, Oregon, is named in Kaufman’s honor
