AMBUSH ON QL19

IN 1970 JIMMY CALLISON, WILLIAM KAGEL & ERNEST QUINTANA WERE THE CREW ON THE GUN TRUCK BRUTUS. BRUTUS WAS ONE OF 3 GUN TRUCKS OF THE 359th MEDIUM TRUCK TRANS CO ( PETROLIUM ). RON MALLORY, RICHARD BOND & CHUCK HUSER USED TO HANG OUT TOGETHER. EVERY TIME THEY RETURNED FROM A CONVOY, THEY WOULD GO HELP THE CREW OF BRUTUS TAKE THE WEAPONS OFF AND CLEAN THEM.WERE CURIOUS AND ASKED ALL KINDS OF QUESTIONS ABOUT THE GUN TRUCK. ONE DAY THE CREW SAID " YOU KNOW WHAT"? IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO US, WE'D LIKE YOU ALL TO TAKE OVER THE GUN TRUCK." NO ONE EXPECTED ANTHING TO HAPPEN.
IT DID!  (SEE ALSO LARRY DAHL PROFILE)
ON 21 NOV 1970, THE ENEMY AMBUSHED A CONVOY NEAR THE AN KHE PASS AND DISTROYED THE GUN TRUCK BRUTUS, WITH A ROCKET. WOUNDING WILLIAM KAGEL AND ERNEST QUINTANA. KILLING JIMMY CALLISON.
AS THE GUN TRUCKS MADE THE ENEMY PAY A HIGH PRICE FOR AMBUSHING CONVOY'S THE NVA HAD A BOUNTY ON THEM, AND BRUTUS WITH IT'S MINI-GUN WAS RUMORED TO HAVE THE HIGHEST BOUNTY. IT LOST MORE CREW'S THAN ANY OTHER GUN TRUCK IN VIETNAM
