This is our platoon portrait. I am fifth from the left in the back row. Next is Pvt. Baugh--with Pvt. Spero (wearing thick, black-rimmed glasses) in front of him, never more than an arm's reach away. Pvt. Wiggins, the "wise old man" in our platoon, is next to Baugh. Our primary DI by this time was SSG Allendorf (holding the guidon in the front row). He was one of the survivors of the 1st Cavalry Div.'s November 1965 debacle in the Ia Drang Valley featured in the book "We Were Soldiers Once--and Young" and the Mel Gibson movie titled more simply, "We Were Soldiers."
