Reflections on SSG Campbell's
US Army Service
PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE ARMY.
I joined the Army because of 9/11. I was in English class as a junior in high school when the news broke about what happened. I went to the recruiter after school that day and entered the delayed entry program.
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BASIC TRAINING AND WHAT UNITS, BASES OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
My plan was to retire after 20+ years but I was medically retired after 14 yrs.
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
My fondest memories were when I was on the trail as a Drill Sergeant at Ft Jackson. So many great memories with my fellow cadre there. My least favorite was being at Ft Eustis because that is where my career ended.
WHAT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF FROM YOUR MILITARY CAREER?
My greatest achievements were completing my time as a Drill Sergeant successfully, making the rank of SSG as quick as I did, and becoming and instructor and earning my instructor badge.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
My Drill Sergeant badge, and my Instructors badge, because they are such a huge milestone in anyone's career.
