Reflections on CPT Henard's US Army Service

 Reflections On My Service

TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH HE/SHE TOOK IN HIS/HER MILITARY SERVICE. WHERE DID THEY GO FOR BASIC TRAINING AND WHAT UNITS, BASES OR SQUADRONS WERE THEY ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS HIS/HER REASON FOR LEAVING?
Already worked as a medical doctor in Greeneville, Tennessee. Enlisted as a medical officer shortly after the war broke out to assist in the effort.
IF HE/SHE PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE YOU FEEL WERE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TO HIM/HER AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY.
Worked as one of the few field doctors in North Africa with a very small detachment. Tried to bring as many comforts as possible to the soldiers and civilians in the area.
FROM THEIR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY PERSONAL MEMORIES, YOU MAY BE AWARE OF, WHICH IMPACTED HIM/HER THE MOST.
Only told one story about the war and avoided any other detailed events. Heard a loud noise one night while writing letters alone in the tent. After turning around, it became clear that one of the POWs had escaped and was armed with a knife. One of the other soldiers had seen him enter and managed to stop the attack. The soldiers were ordered to spare the prisoner and transfer him to the next camp an hour away.
WHAT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS DO YOU BELIEVE HE/SHE WAS MOST PROUD OF FROM HIS/HER MILITARY SERVICE?
Bronze Star-1943
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, WHAT PROFESSION(S) DID HE/SHE FOLLOW AFTER DISCHARGE?
Continued working as a doctor after the war and later for the Tennessee Board of Education. Hal Henard Elementary School was dedicated on 26 Oct 1981 in honor of Hal Henard.
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU BELIEVE HIS/HER SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY THEY APPROACHED THEIR PERSONAL LIFE, FAMILY LIFE AND CAREER?
Was always very private and haunted by the war but continued to help anyone in need. Was known to drive to patients homes in the middle of the night in the mountains if they needed help and worked to ensure access to good education for all.
