Reflections on CPT Konya's
US Army Service
PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE ARMY.
My father, who spent 7 years in the US Marine Corps and 23 years in the US Coast Guard. I have enjoyed being stationed with my family from Miami, Florida to Kodiak, Alaska (This being 2 of the best years of my life).
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BASIC TRAINING AND WHAT UNITS, BASES OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
I have deployed to Operations Desert Shield/Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. My most memorable unit I was a part of was with 2/17th Cavalry Regiment while on active duty and my entire time with 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), the units and the personnel that I have deployed with and trained with.
IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE WHICH MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY?
Operation Desert Shield/Storm and deploying with my Signal Platoon, I became closest to each of those soldiers more than any other in my entire military career.
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
When I was assigned to the 2/17th Cavalry Regiment I felt camaraderie more than any other unit when I was on active duty. Ever since I have been in 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), I have never seen a sense of accomplishment or duty than any other unit, including the active duty. I have also seen the chain of command truly care about the Soldiers in our unit and have a genuine attitude for taking care of the soldiers.
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
Me coming back to the 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) after a 10 year break in service. I made my first drill and first jump in 10 years.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
Airborne School for learning how to throw myself in a controlled manner and hurtling myself through the air while in flight, and Air Assault School where I learned to push myself in the "10 toughest days in the Army."
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
My current CO, who has mentored me and guided me in my new career in Transportation and Logistics and taking me out of my comfort zone of 20 years in the Signal Corps and thrusting me into a new military and civilian career field.
CAN YOU RECOUNT A PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM YOUR SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MAKES YOU LAUGH?
Being on a field training exercise at Fort Campbell, during a rainstorm one night and grabbing on to a door to my platoons RATT rig as the radio was keying up and being thrown off the tailgate of the truck from the shock.
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
I followed a career of 20 years in military and civilian work in communications and computers. I will be departing from that next year when I attend the Logistics and Transportation Captains Career Courses and follow on courses and earning my Master of Arts Degree in Transportation and Logistics Management through American Military University.
WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS ARE YOU A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? WHAT SPECIFIC BENEFITS DO YOU DERIVE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIPS?
Please see my main page for further details. I will be using these professional associations to network and gain a firm foothold in the Transportation and Supply Logistics Industry.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
My military training has been a huge benefit to me in terms of setting goals and accomplishing my mission of learning new skills which will make me successful on the civilian job market. Learning to take chances through self motivation and training to make myself more marketable to a new and changing industry.
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE ARMY?
Set professional goals for yourself in both military and especially civilian education. Take advantage of all of your military benefits, especially dental, medical and going back to school to get a college education.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM HELPED YOU REMEMBER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS YOU SERVED WITH.
| TWS and the US Army |
I am starting to see friends that I have known for years on here. I am going to do everything I can in my unit to ask soldiers and officers to join this site in order to keep in touch with each other and to spread the word to those that have retired to join also. Become reacquainted with our lost friends and pass the word about those comrades that have passed on. DS 3/10/17
