Remembering An American Hero
Posted on 2/13/14 - by Curt Carter ccarter02@earthlink.net

Dear SP4 Edgar John Udell, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter

Proud of my Big Brother
Posted on 2/16/11 - by Doug Udell

Eddy, you taught me how to shoot and fish in the creek and ocean, how NOT to drive a car safely, and how to be cool and dance to the Beach Boys. I shot my first deer with your old 94, from the hip before dad even got the car stopped. I know you were there right then, because that shot was a miracle. I even got the bullet back in my slice of the liver, even though I shot it in the neck. Mom never found it, I did. I think you were there then, too. I only wish that you could have shown me how to survive a war. I will always remember you with the same pride I had for you all those ten years that I got to know you. You were a great Big Brother, and I know you were a great soldier and served our country well. And for all of that, Eddy, I salute you. And I miss you. Love, Duggy

Do not stand at my grave and weep
Posted on 3/9/06 - by Bob Ross

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Never Forgotten

FOREVER REMEMBERED

"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you....and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.....Be not ashamed to say you loved them....
Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own....And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind...."

Quote from a letter home by Maj. Michael Davis O'Donnell
KIA 24 March 1970. Distinguished Flying Cross: Shot down and Killed while attempting to rescue 8 fellow soldiers surrounded by attacking enemy forces.

We Nam Brothers pause to give a backward glance, and post this remembrance to you, one of the gentle heroes lost to the War in Vietnam:

Slip off that pack. Set it down by the crooked trail. Drop your steel pot alongside. Shed those magazine-ladened bandoliers away from your sweat-soaked shirt. Lay that silent weapon down and step out of the heat. Feel the soothing cool breeze right down to your soul ... and rest forever in the shade of our love, brother.

From your Nam-Band-Of-Brothers

A thanks from another Udell.

~ You Are Never Forgotten ~

In Tribute to SP4 Edgar John Udell, with So Much Gratitude for his Courage, Service and Dedication to our Country and for Freedom. Rest well and know that you will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. I am the sister of such a young hero, who also made the Supreme Sacrifice in Vietnam 1967... ...NOW ARISES FROM HALLOWED GROUND A DELICATE CLOUD OF BUGLE NOTES THAT SOFTLY SAY, GO TO SLEEP....COMRADES TRUE, BORN ANEW, PEACE TO YOU. YOUR SOULS SHALL BE WHERE THE HEROES ARE AND YOUR MEMORIES SHINE LIKE THE MORNING STAR....SLUMBER WELL, WHERE THE SHELLS SCREAMED AND FELL....THE DANGER HAS PASSED, AND NOW AT LAST, GO TO SLEEP.... If you are able, save them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.( "Major Michael Davis O'Donnell 1 January 1970 Dak To, Vietnam.") America has been built on the blood of Heros and Brave Men of Honor who answered the call. A fellow veteran wants to thank this hero for his service, and my cherised freedoms. May you rest well in Gods loving embrace brave hero, and may God bring comfort to your loved ones for their sacrifice. You shall never be forgotten by a grateful nation."
