I found this photo that my parents saved of Peter in Vietnam sometime after he arrived there in March 1968 and his death on August 24 of this year. He was first a mapper and gunner in a two-man helicopter with the 101st Airborne before he was transferred to the 25th infantry two or so weeks before his death. Love you and miss you Peter more than you know.

Pete and I sat at the same lunch table during our Senior year in high school. We both caddied at different country clubs during this period. I was home on leave for Thanksgiving 1968. That morning at the high school football game, I heard the sad news. I served in 'Nam with the 25th Infantry Division from December 1968 to December 1969. In 1993 the members of the West Orange High School Class of 1966 raised money to purchase paving stones at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial in memory of Pete and another fallen classmate Gerry De Rose. In May of 1995, the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial was formally dedicated. While attending the ceremony, I found out that Pete also served in the 25th! In October 2006, the Class of '66 had it's 40-year reunion and Pete was remembered. We also rocked the house! My friend, you will never be forgotten!

“You are Remembered”
Peace and condolence, to the family and friends. "He which hath no stomach to this fight let him depart. But we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers!! For he today, that sheds his blood with me, shall always be my brother.” Rest in peace brave soldier, you have not been forgotten. (W.Shakespeare) May God Bless You for your Sacrifice!!!

I have been long remiss for not remembering my brother on this site. He was my only sibling, and I have missed him so much. Our parents are now gone -- our father died of a broken heart in 1977. Our mom died in 2002, calling his name as she went off to meet him.
I know they are all happy together.
Peter was so young, the same age as my daughter. I pray every day that no one will have to endure the tragedy of war in his or her country, region or home. May it all stop now and forever.
"Peter," Mom used to say every night, "Come home now." I know she now has you home with her.
Love, Bette

Remembering An American Hero
Posted on 1/30/14 - by Curt Carter ccarter02@earthlink.net

Dear PFC Peter Frank Kovach, sir As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned. May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you. With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir Curt Carter

Honors

Peter was honored in West Orange, our hometown, on Memorial Day 2012 when I received on his behalf the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal at a ceremony dedicated to his memory. I am his younger sister, his only sibling. It was a beautiful ceremony that also recognized the combat service of nine other sons of West Orange. May he rest in peace with our parents.

Pete, We sat at the same lunch table during our Senior Year. We were both caddies at different country clubs. We both wore the "Electric Strawberry" patch in 'Nam. On the 40th anniversary of your death, I went with your sister to your grave and planted a flag. I know you would be proud of her. She has become the kid sister I never had. She gave me your yearbook for safekeeping. Rest assured it's in good hands. Two years ago you were remembered at our 40th reunion and we rocked the house! Until we meet again "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Cowboys Forever" and "Loopers Forever"!Murph125th Sig. Bn. 25th Infantry Division Vietnam 12/68 -12/69

NEVER FORGOTTEN

FOREVER REMEMBERED  "If you are able, save for them a place inside of you....and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.....Be not ashamed to say you loved them....Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own....And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind...."Quote from a letter home by Maj. Michael Davis O'DonnellKIA 24 March 1970. Distinguished Flying Cross: Shot down and Killed while attempting to rescue 8 fellow soldiers surrounded by attacking enemy forces. We Nam Brothers pause to give a backward glance, and post this remembrance to you, one of the gentle heroes lost to the War in Vietnam:Slip off that pack. Set it down by the crooked trail. Drop your steel pot alongside. Shed those magazine-ladened bandoliers away from your sweat-soaked shirt. Lay that silent weapon down and step out of the heat. Feel the soothing cool breeze right down to your soul ... and rest forever in the shade of our love, brother. From your Nam-Band-Of-Brothers
