John,
I knew you in Y.O.U. I myself joined the Marines in 69' and served tour tours in Nam'. I thought about you often, brother. I still think of you to this day. Thank you for your friendship and your sacrifice, brother. I pray that you and your family will forever be together in the hollow of God's loving hands.

Remembering An American Hero
Posted on 11/11/13 - by Curt Carter ccarter02@earthlink.net

Dear SP4 John Herbert White Jr, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter

An old warrior's wish "When I am dead, cry for me a little. Think of me sometimes, but not too much. It is not good for you to dwell too long. Think of me now and again as I was in life, at some moment which is pleasant to recall, but not for long. Leave me in peace as I shall leave you, too, in peace."

Uncle Jack, I wish we could have met
Growing up I did not hear lot about Jack's service, which was all that I was curious about as a young boy. I was however aware of what kind of character he had. I am proud of him and wish that we could have met. No one really knows this, but I joined the Marine Corps in honor of the line of White men that served before me, especially Uncle Jack and his brother; my Father, Brian

High School
At Magnolia High, a teacher introduced a life situation and invited discussion. Jack was able to express his beliefs.

He had ethics before I understood what that meant. Yes, the teacher gave us a safe place to express our opinions, but Jack is one who gave the compassionate, ethical answer. I appreciated him then but was unable to tell him.

More than forty years have passed and the memory of his kindness is with me still. My condolences to his family on their loss and to community that would have benefited from knowing this man

A nice guy in high school, too soon gone
I went to Magnolia High with Jack, class of '64. He was always great with everyone. A couple of years later I ran into him at Fullerton J.C. Must have been around '65 or '66. One day in 1968 I stopped by my folks' house on my way to work. Mom gave me some newspaper clippings and asked if I'd known the soldier in the obituary. I did, unfortunately. It changed how I looked at the world. Made me pay attention to what was going on. I wish he was still around
