Remembering An American Hero
Posted on 7/12/16 - by Curt Carter ccarter02@earthlink.net
Dear PFC William E Watts, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter
Bill and I were army brats together in Taiwan from 1960 to 1962. We went to Taipei American School, and since we were often seated alphabetically, we were near one another and got to be good friends. We did the things that kids in their early teens usually do; we had sleepovers at each other's houses, we collected stamps, we played ball games and board games and we talked about girls.
Bill and I lost contact when our fathers were transferred back to the USA. I heard of his death from my parents who had kept in touch with other service families stationed in Taiwan at the same time.
My wife and I have been to the Vietnam Memorial several times to pay our respects to Bill at panel 52W Row 19. He answered his country's call and he gave up his life when it had hardly begun. His life and his service deserve to be remembered. His picture is taken from our school yearbook in 1962. He is a typical 15 year old; it's the way I remember him. He had 6 years to live. I hope he is still smiling now. Rest well, Bill.
Respectfully submitted by Steve Weller on 7/12/2002, the 34th anniversary of Bill's death.
A friend,
Steve Weller

William, I am your cousin from your father's side of the family. Your great grandfather William Edward Watts was my great grandmother Addie Watts Brown's oldest brother. I have been working on the family tree with your sister Sandra Watts Ross. She has shared many memories of you with me. My father Herman Anthony 'Toney' Jones served in Vietnam from 1967-1968 in the United States Air Force. I am working on artwork for the Texas Tech University Vietnam Museum. I will definitely inculde your name within the composition of the current painting for the museum. I have enjoyed connecting with your sister Sandra. I wish I could have known you as well. I was only 1 1/2 year old when you passed away. My family had just moved to Ft. Worth about a month after your passing. I can tell by the messages left by your family and friends. You were a very well loved person. Again, I know you are in a peaceful place filled with love and compassion. I hope we meet each other in the afterlife. Your third cousin, Bobby J. Jones

I served with Bill several months and was in a track nearby that last night when his tank was hit. Part of his story is told in a book "100 Miles Of Bad Road" by his friend Dwight Birdwell. One night on LP he said he just wanted to get back to the world and work on his cars. A third of a century later, I still wish he could have.

My brother's best friend
Sammy Culbertson was my brother and Bill was his best friend. I was the one who gave Sammy the sad news of Bill's death. Bill was a sweet boy and remembered well by the Culbertson family.
He was so much fun to grow up with
Bill was a warm, kind, friendly individual who touched many lives. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. As children growing up, he was my best friend and could always find fun things to do. He gave his life for his country, died with honor and dignity, and was a son that any parent would be proud of.
