Brother
You will always have a special place in my heart brother. You died in my arms on that fateful day so many years ago. One who should not have been there but who was still apart of us. We didn't get to know you all that well but you were a true brother to all of us. Those of us who made it home will never forget you. Rest in Peace my brother.

Hello, Billy
I was not a close friend of Billy's but I did know him I lived on Wakefield and he on the next street over on Chippendale and only about 3 houses down from each other. He was a nice kid and as far as I know, he was the only person from our neighborhood who was killed in the war. God bless Billy and his family. Doug Romans

In Loving Memory of Billy Tobias
I knew Billy from first grade through high school. He was a wonderful athlete in elementary school (Oak Forest Elementary in Houston, Texas.) He always teased me about being such a poor "kickball" player. I think we were in every class together in elementary school. He had wonderful shiny black hair and stunning dark brown eyes. And a delightfully devilish smile. I remember the spitballs he threw, along with the other boys in class, when the teacher left the room. I remember that when he walked one leg turned in ("pigeon-toed.") I think that made him an exceptional athlete-he had good balance. I worked with Billy's mother at K-Mart on Long Point in Houston while I attended college. I was at work the day that the military representatives came to tell her that Billy was dead. I've always wondered what happened to that dear woman and her family. I'll always remember Billy's cute smile. God bless him. Cathy Rankin Tiemann Houston, Texas

Dear SP4 Billy Lee Tobias, sir As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned. May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you. With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir Curt Carter

FOREVER REMEMBERED
"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you....and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.....Be not ashamed to say you loved them....
Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own....And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind...."
Quote from a letter home by Maj. Michael Davis O'Donnell
KIA 24 March 1970. Distinguished Flying Cross: Shot down and Killed while attempting to rescue 8 fellow soldiers surrounded by attacking enemy forces.
We Nam Brothers pause to give a backward glance, and post this remembrance to you , one of the gentle heroes lost to the War in Vietnam :
Slip off that pack. Set it down by the crooked trail. Drop your steel pot alongside. Shed those magazine-laden bandoliers away from your sweat-soaked shirt. Lay that silent weapon down and step out of the heat. Feel the soothing cool breeze right down to your soul ... and rest forever in the shade of our love, brother.
From your Nam-Band-Of-Brothers

my grandpa knew Billy when he was a kid. he told me that every time Billy would come into town, he would wear his uniform. he said that he was so proud of that uniform that he would never take it off. He also told me that Billy would like to play around in my grandpa's garage. and when Billy’s dad would come home he would yell at Billy cause he thought that Billy was annoying my grandpa. |
