Homer and I were in the same Platoon in Headquarters Company, 3/4 Cav, while we were stationed with the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
I remember Homer as a very kind giant of a man. He must have been about 6'3" tall and I always wondered how he fit on those short Army cots or wiggled behind the wheel of his Jeep. He was quiet and introspective and a very nice guy. He seemed more destined to become a preacher than a soldier. He was also one of those guys you could always count on when things got nasty.
Homer was transferred out of the Cav just as we were preparing to leave for Vietnam and I lost track of him. Years later I was very sorry to hear his name was on The Wall.
Homer was a great guy and a true Patriot who gave his life in pursuit of better dreams for a people in need of our help. He will be remembered!

I also knew the "Gentle Giant" Homer Tischler in Hawaii. I agree with Rich Fleming on what he said about Homer. He was transferred to C Troop when they deployed to Vietnam up to Pleiku, with 3rd Brigade. That is where he was killed in action.
Rich Fleming called me the other night to say that he did this, and I just wanted to let the family know that I have a Platoon picture of Homer and all of us in Hawaii, the really unique thing about this picture is that another one of us (Don Gardner) had the foresight to have all of us sign the back of that picture and put our home towns on it. Homer's signature is on that picture and his home town was Winters, Texas. I am sure that the family members may want a copy of this, so I am sending it to them in snail mail as Rich Fleming gave me their home address the other day also. Like Rich said he is the tallest one in the picture right in the middle of the back row.
I think of him often, and always leave something about him at either the WALL in D.C. or the Traveling Wall, when it is in my area.
We will never forget him or never let anyone else forget the sacrifice that he made. God Bless Homer and his family also. May the good Lord always hold him in the palm of His hands.
