For the past 17 years my students and I have been conducting research for the state of Indiana. In 1995-96 Lake Central High School students did all the research for the Indiana Vietnam Veterans Memorial in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. We are seeking the family and friends of the 1621 individuals from the state of Indiana that gave their lives during the Vietnam War. To date we have located 891+ families. Please contact us if you have any information or photos.

My dad, Barton (Tony) Moore, served with John Pettitt in Vietnam. He said John had a young son, but he couldn't remember if John had been married. He knew John was fron Indiana, but we just found out recently that John had been an Indiana state trooper at one time. The anniversary of John's death is coming up soon. He will never be forgotten. His family remains in my prayers.

Cousin
From a relative who never got to know you
Sgt. Pettitt, you were my mother Rita Tevebaugh Hardy's first cousin. I never really knew you, but Mom always talked about what a fine man you were. Like all of your family she was proud of your work as a police officer and a soldier. I remember seeing pictures of you at your parents' home when I was in high school. I could tell you were loved and missed. Thank you for giving the last full measure of devotion to and for your country.

Just discovered this memorial page and am pleased to see that my uncle John is still remembered and thought of. Uncle John, we have never met, but all of the stories and memories that dad and his family have shared have made me proud to be your niece. I only wish I could have known you in person. I am thinking about you this Veteran's Day and am so proud of the hero that you truly are. You have a HUGE and beautiful family that loves you and will always remember the gentleman that you are.
We will never forget your sacrifice.

NEVER FORGOTTEN
FOREVER REMEMBERED

"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you....and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.....Be not ashamed to say you loved them....
Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own....And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind...."

Quote from a letter home by Maj. Michael Davis O'Donnell
KIA 24 March 1970. Distinguished Flying Cross: Shot down and Killed while attempting to rescue 8 fellow soldiers surrounded by attacking enemy forces.

We Nam Brothers pause to give a backward glance, and post this remembrance to you , one of the gentle heroes lost to the War in Vietnam:
Slip off that pack. Set it down by the crooked trail. Drop your steel pot alongside. Shed those magazine-ladened bandoliers away from your sweat-soaked shirt. Lay that silent weapon down and step out of the heat. Feel the soothing cool breeze right down to your soul....and rest forever in the shade of our love, brother.

From all your "Band of Nam Brothers"

Do not stand at my grave and weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Not Forgotten
I am a student at Gridley High School, Gridley Illinois. We were assigned a class project to post remembrances on the Virtual Wall for those who were killed during the Vietnam War. You’ll never know how much your service is appreciated. You made the supreme sacrifice and died for your country for freedom. Words cannot express my thankfulness, and I want you to know how much of an inspiration you are to many young Americans today. Your courage and bravery stands out and will forever live on. You will never be forgotten. May God bless you and your family.
