Your remembrance means a lot. I apologize for the lateness of the acknowledgement. I would be honored to talk with you sometime. I didn't know a whole lot but, you are right, I am proud and humble to be his son.

Your father and I were friends in high school. As I have said before several years ago, he was a great person. I did not know that he had a son. But you can be proud, though never knowing him, that he was a good man and would have been a great father to you. I don't know if you will ever read this, but know this you would have loved him.

Remembering an American Hero
Posted on 4/6/13 - by Curt Carter ccarter02@earthlink.net

Dear PFC Donald Ray Johnson, sir As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. Those who served with you, such as Mr. Bob Whaley, remember you with pride and respect for the American Hero that you are. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned. May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say 'thank you'; for America, for those who love you, and for the Sgt's son. With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir Curt Carter (son of Sgt. Ardon William Carter, 101st Airborne, died February 4, 1966, South Vietnam)

Never Forgotten
FOREVER REMEMBERED

"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you....and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.....Be not ashamed to say you loved them....
Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own....And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind...."

Quote from a letter home by Maj. Michael Davis O'Donnell
KIA 24 March 1970. Distinguished Flying Cross: Shot down and Killed while attempting to rescue 8 fellow soldiers surrounded by attacking enemy forces.

We Nam Brothers pause to give a backward glance, and post this remembrance to you, one of the gentle heroes lost to the War in Vietnam:

Slip off that pack. Set it down by the crooked trail. Drop your steel pot alongside. Shed those magazine-ladened bandoliers away from your sweat-soaked shirt. Lay that silent weapon down and step out of the heat. Feel the soothing cool breeze right down to your soul ... and rest forever in the shade of our love, brother.

From your Nam-Band-Of-Brothers

Thank You
Dear Donald,
I am a student from Gridley High School located in Gridley, IL. We are posting remembrances for a class project and to honor those that paid the ultimate sacrifice. This project is the Gridley High School Posting Project.
I am indebted to you for your service to this nation. You fought to the death because of the beliefs that you knew this nation stood for. You fought for all those that you knew. But most importantly, you fought for yourself and your band of brothers. Thank you for your fighting. You were a great soldier

Thank You Donald
Dear Donald,
I am doing a Gridley High School Posting Project and I am a student from Gridley, Illinois. Our teacher has assigned us to read about those who have given their lives during the Vietnam War and then write remembrances for them, especially for those who might not have a remembrance. Even though I never knew you, I would like to thank you for your bravery and for helping defend our country. You were a hero and will always be. God bless.
Sincerely,
Kelsey Zehr
