NEVER FORGOTTEN
My Uncle John, I cannot remember seeing you but once and that was when I was around 4 y/o and being lifting up to look into the glass of the casket that held your body. I was very touched by that moment and remembered how special everyone told me you were. My dad, your brother, Carmel Hampton, has since shared many memories with me of you. He is 84 y/o still strong and vibrate and has a memory that is unreal so his memories of you will forever be in my heart.
A Note from The Virtual Wall

PFC John E. Hampton, Whitesburg, KY; and
PFC Rudolph Whitaker, Wilson, NC.

It is funny how even though you never met someone they can have an affect upon you. Private Hampton died before I was born. I can remember his picture being displayed proudly in our home with a half dollar that he gave my grandmother before he shipped out. He told her that he would not be coming home, how true were those words. I don't know what happened that long ago day, I do know that it took his life. I used to look at that picture and wonder who that man was. He made such an impression on the family that hung with other members of the family. Since I moved away from the home many years ago, I have not seen the picture. I will never forget the time I visited the Wall and the feelings I had. Mr. Hampton, you live in my heart. I have heard you were a good man and a good friend to some of my kin. For all that and your sacrifice, I am grateful.

Never Forgotten
Always Remembered
Slip off that pack. Set it down by the crooked trail. Drop your steel pot alongside. Shed those magazine-ladened bandoliers away from your sweat-soaked shirt. Lay that silent weapon down and step out of the heat. Feel the soothing cool breeze right down to your soul....and rest forever in the shade of our love, brother.

Not forgotten
John, Although we never met, I just want you to know you are not forgotten. You gave the ultimate sacrifice, your life for what you believed in. Sleep well my friend, and thank you for protecting the freedoms we have today.
