I was there when SSG Sombelon died. Part of our job was to detonate unexploded ordinance we came upon. He had set a grenade by an unexploded mortar round and just as he stood up and turned to return to where the rest of us were waiting, the detonation occurred. He was smiling. I do remember he had talked about his children to PSG Moses and I before he went out to blow the dud. None of us could believe this had happened. The grenade must have had a defective fuse. He was a quiet person who normally kept to himself. I still remember him as though it were yesterday.
