Mustered into the 10th New Hampshire Infantry as a private on 11 Aug, 1863 for three years, a substitute. On 29 Sept, 1864, while in battle at Chapin's Farm, VA and the subsequent taking of the neighboring Fort Harrison, he captured the enemy flag, which resulted in his receiving the Medal of Honor on 6 April, 1865.
In June, 1865, the original three-year recruits of the 10th were mustered out, with the newcomers and reenlistments tranferring to the 2nd NH Inf. Brady was "absent, sick" at this time, and officially didn't join the regiment.
