Major Carlson was part of a team of United Nations observers to supervise the U.N. truce in Lebanon.
"Four members of a special United Nations observer force, including two American officers, were killed Saturday when their jeep hit a mine near Beirut, the Defense Department announced.
Early today the two officers were identified by the Pentagon as Air Force Maj. Harley Warren, 34 years old, of Baldese, N.C., and Army Maj. Randall Carlson, 35, of Derwood, Md.
The officers were part of a 50-man unit of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Beirut, a United Nations spokesman said Saturday. The group, a 300-man force composed of members from 25 nations, was created to supervise the 1948 truce between the Arabs and Israel.
The forces are not affiliated with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, the 7,000-man United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon."
