 Additional Information
Last Known Activity:

World War II Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during World War II as a Sergeant in Company E, 142nd Infantry, 36th Infantry Division. On February 11, 1945, he led the 3rd Platoon to rescue a unit which had been surrounded in an enemy counterattack at Oberhoffen, France. After spotting enemy troops crossing a field toward the surrounded platoon, he ran into a barn and opened fire with a submachine gun. He killed six German troops, wounded several others and stopped the advance. Starting for the next house, he destroyed the machine-gun position and killing its two operators. Rejoining his unit, he advanced house to house destroying enemy positions securing the objective and captured more than 40 enemy soldiers. Due to leadership and courage displayed, his heroic attacks were responsible for repulsing an enemy counterattack and saving an American platoon from great danger. President Truman presented Dahlgren with the Medal of Honor, at a White House ceremony August 23, 1945. He left military service after the war with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His other medals included the Silver Star, three Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre. He was awarded the French Legion of Honor in a ceremony in April 2006.
