Sergeant John P. Beech was born on May 1, 1844 in Staffordshire, England. Beech emigrated to Boston, Massachussetts in 1848. Beech later moved to Trenton, New Jersey in 1856, where he found a job with City Pottery at the corner of Perry and Carroll Street.

Beech joined B Company of the 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 9, 1861 to fight the Union Army in the American Civil War.

Beech was promoted to Corporal on September 1 1864. He would be promoted again on February 1 1865 to the rank of Sergeant.

Sergeant Beech was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery in Spotsylvania Court in Virginia on May 12 1864 during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.
