Last Known Activity
Enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 11 August 1942 at Berkeley, California. After specialized training in Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) at Harvard University, MIT, and Boca Raton Field, Florida, he was assigned to the 870th Bomb Squadron, 497th Bombardment Group (VH), 73rd Bomb Wing, XXI Bomber Command, 20th Air Force at Isley Field on Saipan in the Mariana Islands. During the night of 3-4 July 1945, he flew as the Radar Counter Measure Officer aboard Boeing B-29 Super Fortress Serial #42-24774, call sign a-square-22, nicknamed 'Miss Hap' on a mission to incendiary bomb the Kochi urban area of Japan. The aircraft and aircrew were lost when they were hit with Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) fire and crashed into a forest near the city of Kochi.
