Details Behind Award
Unknown if actually awarded to LTC Kennedy, but he certainly earned it by being mentioned in dispatches and being cited for gallantry on many occasions. This included the Nez Perce War of 1877, the Bannock War of 1878, Arizona Apache Actions in 1881, and the Spanish-American War of 1898. Private Kennedy, after only 18 months of service, received a promotion to Corporal for his actions at Silver Creek on June 23, 1878; he was also nominated for the Medal of Honor but the recommendation was lost before it was approved. Colonel Kennedy certainly would have earned more decorations for his outstanding service and courageous actions, but the MOH was the only such award during his thirty-five years in the U.S. Army and Georgia Militia/National Guard (January 1877-July 1912).
