Personal Memories

Other Memories
Zamperini was sent to the Allan Hancock College of Aeronautics in Santa Maria, CA as part of his AAF Bombardier Flight Training in 1941 after he enlisted in the army for the second time; the first time was for OCS / flight training for to be a P-38 pilot and he washed out of this training and was released from the army with the stipulation that he could be called back in or if he re-enlisted that the army could put him back into flight training. He was unaware of this stipulation as he did not read the fine-print. When Congress announced that a Draft would be started soon in 1941 Zamperini re-enlisted in to the regular army, finished basic training and was assigned to the army infantry as a private. Zamperini wanted to stay in the regular army infantry but the army had other plans for him and re-assigned him to the AAF (Army Air Corps) in early 1941, and he was sent to AAF Bombardier training instead of pilot training.
