Last Known Activity
After his military career, he was appointed Secretary of State by President Harry S. Truman and held that office from January 21, 1947 until January 20, 1949.

On September 21, 1950, President Truman appointed him to be the Secretary of Defense. He held that position until September 12, 1951. Due to difficulties in the Korean War, he resigned his post as Secretary of Defense and retired from politics.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for the "Marshall Plan" which was the European Recovery Program  that he had proposed in 1947 after WW II.


General George Catlett Marshall is interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
