Description With the First Marine Division finally ashore at Wonsan, and South Korean troops rapidly moving along North Korea's east coast, Tenth Corps decided to land the Seventh Infantry Division near Iwon, where it would be well-positioned to strike further north. Most of the Navy's amphibious shipping was still occupied with Wonsan-related chores, so the soldiers were mainly brought north from Pusan in merchant-type ships, then transferred to LSTs and smaller beaching craft while anchored offshore.
The operation went slowly but smoothly, assisted by a total absence of enemy resistance. Following the now-mandatory mine clearance operation, landings commenced on 29 October. The entire embarked force was ashore by 8 November. From Iwon, much of the Seventh Division moved inland against slight opposition. One of its units briefly reached the Yalu river at Hyesanjin on 21 November, marking U.S. ground forces' northernmost advance of the Korean War.
