Description Roosevelt took it upon himself to lead a bold charge. Facing the Rough Riders was a smaller hill which received the name Kettle Hill because the Americans found a large kettle near the base. Roosevelt formed his regiment and began to advance.

Memories Served with the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment as a Captain and, after taking command of Troop A, received a Brevet promotion to Major for his actions at the Battle of the San Juan Heights on July 1st, 1898.
