T/3 ANTHONY THOMAS "TONY" BALASSONE WAS BORN IN ALBERT, TUCKER COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA ON 17 JANUARY 1912 THE SON OF JOSEPH AND ANNA LA CIRITA BALASSONE. HE WAS TEACHER BEFORE ENTERING THE SERVICE ON 2 SEPTEMBER 1941. HE SERVED IN THE PACIFIC WITH THE 7TH EVACUATON HIOSPITAL FROM 17 JUN 1943 UNTIL 15 OCTOBER 1945. T/3 BALASSONEWAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED ON 24 OCTOBER 1945 AT FORT KNOX, KENTUCKY. TONY BALASSONE PASSED AWAY ON 3 OCTOBER 1967 AT HIS HOME IN WILMINTON, DELAWARE. AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A SALESMAN WITH PPG INDUSTRIES. ANTHONY WAS LAID TO REST AT THE MOUNT CALVARY CEMETERY IN THOMAS, WEST VIRGINIA. ANTHONY WAS ONE OF 3 BALASSONE BROTHERS HO SERVED DURING WWII, T/3 GUY L AND SERGEANT JOHN J. BALASSONE.
Description (Southern Philippines Campaign 27 February to 4 July 1945) After Luzon had been invaded and Manila taken, a series of landings were made in the southern Philippines, on Palawan, Mindanao, Panay, Cebu, Negros, and other islands. In some places the Japanese offered little resistance; in others they held out for considerable time. The liberation of the Philippines was announced by MacArthur on 5 July 1945.
