SERGEANT JOE J. ELYARD ENLISTED IN THE ARMY RIGHT AFTER HIGH SCHOOL ON 1 AUGUST 1939.  AFTER BASIC TRAINING HE WAS STATIONED IN HAWAII FROM 6 OCTOBER 1939 TO 18 OCTOBER 1941. FROM 25 OCTOBER 1941 TO 15 APRIL 1943 HE WAS STATIONED IN THE UNITED STATES. ON 21 MAY 1943 SGT ELYARD SERVED AS A SQUAD LEADER AND TOOK PART IN THE INVASION OF ATTU IN THE AEULTIAN ISLANDS AND FROM THERE SERVED IN SEVERAL OF THE 7TH INFANTRY DIVISIONS CAMPAIGNS IN THE PACIFIC. ON 23 SEPTEMBER 1945 JOE ELYARD WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED AND SENT HOME. I DONT HAVE MUCH INFORMATION OTHER THAN AT THE TIME OF HIS PASSING ON 3 NOVEMBER 1978 HE WAS LIVING IN LEE FLORIDA.

Description
(Southern Philippines Campaign 27 February to 4 July 1945) After Luzon had been invaded and Manila taken, a series of landings were made in the southern Philippines, on Palawan, Mindanao, Panay, Cebu, Negros, and other islands. In some places the Japanese offered little resistance; in others they held out for considerable time. The liberation of the Philippines was announced by MacArthur on 5 July 1945.
