"HAMNER - Dr. George Pinkard Hamner, 99, father of Mrs. I. Clay Thompson of Tampa, passed away Tuesday in Bay Pines Hospital. He was sent to Sheffield Funeral Home, Lovingston, Va., Saturday. Dr. Hamner was one of three surviving Rough Riders serving with Colonel Theodore Roosevelt in Cuba during the Spanish-American war. He also served as a Major in the Medical Corps during WWI. Born May 23, 1873, son of the late William A. and Sarah Shepard Hamner at Faber, Va., he married Blanche Stevens Hamner of Lovingston on June 29, 1907. Graduated from University of Virginia Medical School in 1903, and practiced medicine in Nelson County and Lynchburg, Va., before moving to Florida in 1928. He was a resident and practiced medicine in Hollywood, Fla., for more than 30 years, retiring in 1963 after 60 years of active practice. He was Elder Emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood; a mason; member of the American Legion, and served as vice president of the Rough Riders Association. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Herbert Delk, Lovingston, Va., Mrs. I. Clay Thompson, Tampa and Miss Jean Hamner, Miami, Fla.; six grandchildren and five great grandsons.
