Last Known Activity:
My dad is buried in a beautiful spot at Arlington National Cemetery.
Worst Moment On 2 September 1960, my dad's squadron was bivouaced at Camp Kasserine, Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany. They had just arrived at Graf in preparation for gunnery. Early that morning, an 8 inch howitzer round impacted in the squadron area, killing 15 soldiers and wounding 25 others. It was the single worst training accident of the Cold War in Europe. My mom told me many years later that my dad never got over this incident and one of the soldiers standing just next to him was cut in two by a fragment.
Other Memories My father was assigned to 3/12 Cavalry when the squadron was stationed in Buedingen, Germany. It was the reconnaissance squadron for the 3rd Armored Division.
