Daniel Arundell, 76, dies; hero of '98; GOT DSC in '39

Daniel Arundell, holder of the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary bravery in the Spanish-American War - a decoration he received more than 40 years after he earned it - died yesterday in his home, 927 E. 32d St. He was 76.

For his part in the Battle of El Caney, Cuba, on July 1, 1898, Mr. Arundell, then a sargeant, received a Certificate of Merit. Congress, in 1918, authorized the award of the Distinguished Service Medal to holders of these certificates. He submitted his claim and received the medal at a special review on the Fort Hamilton parage ground. He learned that he was also entitled to the Distinguished Service Cross and received that higher decoration in 1939.

The DSC citation stated that the award was for "voluntarily taking an exposed position from which he could get a better fire and holding it until he was seriously wounded."

In addition, Mr. Arundell held the Purple Heart and a medal awarded for his part in quelling the uprising of the Sioux Indians under Sitting Bull in the winter of 1890-91, an action which has come to be known as the "last real Indian skirmish in America."

Mr. Arundell served 10 years in the regular Army, having joined in 1888, a year after he came to this country from his native Newport, Wales. After the Spanish-American War, he served 44 years as an examiner in the customs service. He was a past commander of William McKinley Camp 62, United Spanish War Veterans.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth F. Arundell, two daughters, Mrs. Frances Bates and Mrs. Kathryn Brooks, both of Hempstead, two sons, Joseph and lt. Daniel Arundell, Jr. of the Navy and six grandchildren.
