Chain of Command Served as a Rifle Platoon Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division when it deployed to North Africa (April-July 1943) and when it entered combat on Sicily in July 1943.
Other Memories After already having served as a Rifle Platoon Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division for nine months, Sergeant Kennedy deployed for more training in North Africa in April 1943. Three months later he participated in the first large-scale airborne combat drop in American history, when the 82nd Airborne (as part of Operation Husky) parachuted into Sicily on July 9th, 1943. Several weeks later he took over his platoon and received a battlefield commission after the Platoon Leader was mortally wounded.
