Memories For This Unit

Chain of Command
Served as a Rifle Company Commanding Officer with the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division across Western Europe (France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany)

Other Memories
After taking command of his Rifle Company in Normandy during June 1944, 1LT Kennedy continued to fight on until the 82nd was withdrawn in July to rest and refit for another combat assault. During this time Kennedy was promoted to Captain. On September 17th, 1944 the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division would conduct its final airborne assault of the war, jumping in Holland as part of Operation Market Garden. After completing it mission around Nijmegen CPT Kennedy and the 82nd continued to fight near Arnhem before returning to France. The 82nd was instrumental in blocking von Rundstedt's northern advance during the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes Offensive) in December 1944. Kennedy and the rest of his outfit, despite suffering heavy casualties, continued to fight for the next several months, regaining the ground that had been lost and advancing into Germany. Always leading from the front, Kennedy was forced to leave his beloved Company towards the end of March 1945 when he received another promotion.
