Chain of Command Served as a Rifle Platoon with the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division in Sicily, a combat assault into Italy at Salerno, resting/refitting in England, and then another combat jump into Normandy.
Other Memories After taking command of his Rifle Platoon and receiving a battlefield commission 2LT Kennedy continued to fight across Sicily before the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division conducted its second combat jump into Italy at Salerno on September 13th, 1943. The 82nd then redeployed to England to rest, refit, and replace the losses it suffered in its first two tastes of combat. Shortly after he arrived there, in November 1943, Michael Kennedy received a promotion to First Lieutenant (although he retained his same post). On June 6th, 1944 he participated in his third combat jump when the 82nd landed in Normandy, France. After several weeks of the heaviest and bloodiest fighting he had yet seen in the war 1LT Kennedy was forced to take command of his Rifle Company after both the original CO and XO were killed.
