Last Known Activity:

1st Lt. Sigsbee had prior service to his WWII service.  He had served from 5 August 1938 - 4 August 1941.  He was based at Schofield Barracks, Wahiawa, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii. with Company C, 3rd Engineer Battalion in September 1938. Prior to this, he had been at the Overseas Recruit Depot, Fort Slocum, New York from which he was assigned to Hawaii.

On 29 December 1941, he re-enlisted. He attended the Air Service Command School, Aviation Institute of Technology in Long Island, New York where he was trained as an aircraft mechanic.  He graduated from this program 13 May 1942.

Note: He may have then served in the Alaska Defense Command, serving with a special services company based at Fairbanks, Fort Wainwright until the spring/summer of 1943, near Ladd Field: Service most likely with the 11th Air Force, 23rd Air Base Group.   He would have arrived in Alaska during the campaign against the Japanese on the Aleutian Islands from June 1942- 26 March 1943.  At this point, the Army began to send newer fighter and bomber aircraft to Alaska during this period. No combat service noted.

Then, he attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia.  Cpl. Sigsbee was honorably discharged from the Army on 29 August 1943, when he completed his training at Fort Benning; the 13-week program at OCS at Fort Benning, graduating on 30 August 1943, when he received his commission as a 2nd Lt.. 

He married Georgie Mary Shepherd on 14 August 1943 at Trinity Church, Columbus, Georgia.

2nd Lt. Sigsbee then served at the Infantry Replacement Training Center at Camp Croft, near Spartansburg, South Carolina, most likely with the 75th Infantry Division. He had further training and service at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. which was a combat training base at the time, Oct-Nov 1943.

In the ETO, he served with the 494th Port Battalion, serving from 15 June 1944 - 29 August 1945.

1st Lt. Sigsbee served until 13 November 1945 when he was honorably discharged

At the time of his death, he was Program Director of KOMU, University of Missiouri.  His home was in Columbia, Missouri. He was killed in an automobile accident on 20 June1956 near Lexington, Virginia.

He was interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, Plot: Sec: 2, Site: 941-A.

He was a grandson of Rear Admiral Charles Dwight Sigsbee (USS Maine), he was buried next to his grandfather in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery.
