Bury General Ord Of Old Army Family, Tuesday
Washington. Major General James Garesche Ord, 73, member of a family that has provided regular Army officers since the War of 1812 died Friday of a heart attack.

He will be buried with military honors in the Ord family plot here at Arlington national Cemetery on Tuesday.

Ord, who was retired, was a direct descendant of James Ord, high born Englishman who came to Maryland in the early 19th century. On his mother's side, Ord descended from Colonial Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts. Fort Ord, California is named after his grandfather, General E.O.C. Ord of Civil War fame.

Ord served in France during World War I and in World War II was briefly Assistant Commander of the First Division. Later he commanded the 28th Division in the United States. For the last three years of the war, Ord was Chairman of the joint Brazil-United States Defense Commission and was a member of the Inter-American Defense Board. He retired in 1946 and lived in the District of Columbia with his family.

Ord is survived by his widow, the former Irene Walsh of Memphis, Tennessee, two sons and a daughter. Neither son, however, is in military service in line with family tradition.
