1944-1944, 1222, Army Garrison, Camp Gruber (Joint Maneuver Training Center)
Army Garrison, Camp Gruber (Joint Maneuver Training Center) Details
The Oklahoma National Guard's Camp Gruber Maneuver Training Center is located 14 miles southeast of Muskogee, Oklahoma, on Oklahoma Route 10 in the Cookson Hills. The site covers more than 33,000 acres. In February 1942 the camp was named "Gruber," after Brig. Gen. Edmund L. Gruber, long-time artillery officer at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Worst Moment Finding my Unit had shipped out for Europe after returning from medical leave.
Other Memories After my Appendectomy and being sent home for 30 day medical recovery leave, I came back to Camp Gruber, OK via train from NYC to Chicago to Tulsa. From Tulsa, I took a truck to Gruber to find that the entire 643rd TD Bn had shipped out for mobilization for Europe.
I was assigned to 15th Tank Destroyer Group. They assigned me to HQ/15 TDGP as an Inspector (MOS 2521)and later as a Ration Officer (MOS 2156-9).
I had wanted to get to the war, so I volunteered for transfer to the Parachute Infantry.
