During World War I, he was SGT Alvin York's company commander - Company G, 328th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Infantry Division.

He was awarded two Silver Star Citations during WWI (later converted to Silver Star Medals).

He served on active duty from Aug 1917 thru June 1919 - and - Nov 1940 thru Aug 1954.
