On the date that he was captured the 2nd Infantry Division was serving as the rear guard for the withdrawal of the 8th Army from North Korea due to the intervention of the Chinese army. On Dec 1, 1950, the division was moving south in a running battle while mostly encircled. This action is known as the Battle of Ch'ongch'on River. Near Kunu-Ri, the division was forced to withdrawal through a six mile long valley, later named "the Gauntlett." Casulties were very high.
PFC Hoover was held in POW Camp Ch'ang-Song.
