During a ceremony on 7 September 2008, the 7th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment was inactivated and its personnel and equipment reflagged as the 1st Battalion (Attack Reconnaissance), 158th Aviation Regiment, which was concurrently activated. The change had officially been made effective 16 June 2008.
The 7th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment was headquartered at Conroe, Texas a suburb of Houston and southeast of Fort Hood. The unit operated out of the Montgomery County Airport. The Squadron operated and maintained 24 Apache helicopters, with a support structure of more than 370 enlisted soldiers, officers, aviators, and civilians.
The 7th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment was originally activated in Conroe, Texas on 17 September 1988. Members of 7th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment fired the first shots in combat from an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter during Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989. The unit itself completed fielding of the type in 1992. The Squadron participated in Operation Desert Spring in Kuwait between 2001 and 2002.
