MG Hughes saw combat in Cuba (1898) and France (1918).

He was the Commanding General of the Philippine Department/Division,1937 - 1939.

He retired in FEB 1940.
 
He was recalled to active duty from SEP 1941 to FEB 1945 and served as a Member of the War Department Personnel Board..

MG Hughes passed away in 1953.

1st Army Corps
Activated in World War I in France, I Corps oversaw US Army divisions as they repelled several major German offensives and led them into Germany. The Corps was deactivated following the end of the war. Campaign streamers, Champagne-Marne,1917; Aisne-Marne, 1917; St. Mihiel, 1917; Meuse-Argonne, 1917; Ile de France, 1918; Champagne, 1918; and Lorraine, 1918.
