CORPORAL JOHN OSCAR KNARR WAS A FARM HAND NEAR HAMBLETON WEST VIRGINIA BEFORE ENTERING THE SERVICE ON 16 JULY 1942. HE SERVED IN EUROPE FROM 25 JANUARY 1943 TO 22 SEPTEMBER 1945 AS AN AMMUNITION BEARER (MOS 845) WITH THE 34TH BOMB SQUADRON, 17TH BOMB GROUP. UPON RETURNING TO THE STATES CPL KNARR WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED ON 13 OCTOBER 1945 AT FORT GEORGE MEADE MARYLAND. JOHN KNARR PASSED AWAY IN PARSONS WEST VIRGINIA ON 13 MAY 1975.
On August 20, 1942, Twelfth Air Force was activated at Bolling AAF, Maryland. On September 23, 1942. Brigadier General Jimmy Doolittle formally assumed 12th AF command with Colonel Hoyt S. Vandenberg as chief of staff. Barely four months after it was conceived, 12th AF made its first contributions to World War II.
