US Army Chief of Staff from Oct 2, 1935 - Aug 31, 1939. 

Recalled to active duty to serve as Chairman of the Secretary of War's Personnel Board from Sep 1941 until his death on July 25, 1945. 

Served as US Army Chief of Staff between two more famous Chiefs of Staff;  Douglas MacArthur (1935) and George C. Marshall (1939).
